TRAINING ONLY
We are not a boarding
facility or breeder. We only do what we are good at: training dogs for hunters.
THE
PROGRAM
For the safety of all dogs, every dog entering the Red Deer Gun Dogs facility must have
a record of current vaccinations and a current health check.
We limit the number
of dogs in training so that each dog receives the time it needs to achieve the training goals.
All
dogs enter an obedience program upon arrival. This includes, but is not limited to, SIT, HERE, STAY, HEEL
and DOWN. Dogs entering Red Deer Gun Dogs can be trained for waterfowl, upland or both depending on your needs.
After the basic obedience is completed the dog will be taught single and double retrieves with increasing
difficulty and distance. The dog will be hold conditioned after this stage of the training.
The
next phase in the training is to develop the dog’s memory and teach it to ignore distractions.
Next,
hand signals and blind retrieves are taught and the dog will be introduced to gun fire and to honor other dogs.
Finally, the dog will be taught how to mark birds and to do marked retrieves.
We work the dogs in different types of land and water scenarios and in all weather conditions including
snow, as we train year round.
Red Deer Gun Dogs knows that you want a dog that will work for you,
not just the training staff. During different stages of the training we invite you to visit and train with
your dog.
FEEDING
We have dog food that we have
had good results with, however if your dog has a preference or special dietary consideration accommodations will be made.
EXERCISE PROGRAM
If a dog isn’t fit it is useless to take hunting
with you. We assure you that, given reasonable time, we will return to you a dog that is fit and ready
to work. Each day your dog will be exercised in addition to training.
